Fast Lady Northern Southern Cow Pea
We have always wanted to grow cow peas (black-eyed peas) in our zone 5 gardens but couldn’t find one that would produce reliably for us. Until now that is. Plant breeder and author Carol Deppe (one of our heroes) managed to find a natural mutation in a patch of Lady Cow Peas that ripened early even in her cool growing conditions. She worked with those seeds for 8 years then released this OSSI pledged variety. It is a delight. Early, productive, bushy, tolerant of cool conditions, delicious, creamy and suitable for small space gardens. No need to soak before cooking. Eat them fresh as shelly peas or do as Carol does and dry them down for a nutritious gluten free substitute for rice or pasta.
Vigna unguiculata
Days to Maturity: 65 days fresh 95 days dry
