When to Sow:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures remain above 10 °C (50 °F).
How to Sow:
Sow seeds 0.5 cm (¼") deep in moist, well-drained seed mix. Keep warm (22–26 °C / 72–80 °F) until germination, which usually takes 5–10 days. Provide strong light once seedlings emerge.
Transplanting:
Pot up seedlings once true leaves appear, burying stems deeply to encourage root growth. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors.
Spacing:
Plant 45–60 cm (18–24") apart in rows or beds. Allow good air circulation to prevent disease.
Growing Conditions:
Full sun and rich, well-drained soil are essential. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Water deeply and consistently, especially during fruit set. Mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce splashing.
Care:
Stake or trellis indeterminate varieties for upright growth and easier harvest. Remove lower leaves and side shoots as plants mature. Regular feeding every 2–3 weeks with compost tea or organic fertilizer supports steady fruiting.
Harvest:
Pick when fruits are fully colored and slightly soft to the touch. Frequent harvest encourages continued production.
