Japanese Indigo
Japanese Indigo
The legendary blue plant dye of Japan, Korea, and China. Grown not for its flowers, but for the alchemy in its leaves. This heat-loving annual produces lush green foliage that hides the deep blues within, revealed only through fermentation or fresh-leaf processing. We have been selecting this strain for several years on our zone 5 farm for earliness and vigour. Plants grow up to 1 m tall in full sun with regular water. We can harvest leaves two to three times per season for dyeing before plants flower which is triggered by shortening days. Cut tops once plants are 30-45 cm (12-18") tall and not yet flowering. A beautiful and rewarding addition to any dye garden.
Persicaria tinctoria
