Poppy - Double Pink Breadseed
Poppy - Double Pink Breadseed
Lush, ruffled blooms in soft pink top grey-green foliage on these easy to grow beauties. The flower buds are just as captivating, nodding downward on a curved stem until they suddenly split open revealing the petals within. Blooms July through August and after petal drop the seed pods steal the show. Pods are very sculptural and are perfect for dried arrangements and crafts. Save the edible seeds for baking and for use toasted in Indian, Persian and Mediterranean cooking. One of our favorite birthday cakes is a lemon curd poppy seed cake that makes an appearance at many farm birthday lunches. Prefers full sun and tolerates dry soils.
Papavare somniferum
Days to Maturity: 80-90 days
Life Cycle: Annual (self seeding)
Direct seed poppies in late fall or early spring. Sprinkle seed lightly on the soil surface and cover with .6 cm of soil as they require darkness to germinate. Firm soil. Poppies do not transplant well so indoor seeding is not recommended. Thin to 15 cm apart when first true leaves appear to give plants room to develop. Allow seed pods to dry on the plant then cut and place upside down in a paper bag to collect the seeds. Dry seeds and store in a glass jar.
