Growing Instructions

When to Sow:
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed.

How to Sow:
Sow seeds 0.5 cm (¼") deep in moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Maintain a warm temperature of 24–27 °C (75–80 °F) until germination.

Germination:
Seeds germinate in 7–14 days under warm, bright conditions.

Thinning & Spacing:
Transplant seedlings when 10–15 cm (4–6") tall, spacing plants 60 cm (24") apart in rows 90 cm (36") apart. Plant at least two tomatillos for proper cross-pollination and fruit set.

Growing Conditions:
Prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Provide consistent moisture and mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Care:
Stake or cage plants to support heavy fruit loads. Water deeply
once or twice per week, avoiding overhead watering.

Harvest:
Harvest when husk turns papery and splits, and the fruit inside is
firm and fills the husk. Use fresh for salsas or sauces, or store in a cool, dry place for up to two weeks.

A long storing, purple tomatillo with great taste. This is a landrace population of purple tomatillos bred by our friends at Adaptive Seeds. A landrace is a genetically and physically diverse collection of a domesticated plant that has adapted to a region over time which results in a resilient population that can adapted to harsh conditions. The colour purple is the theme and fruits range from just a hint of purple on green to dark purple skin and fruit. We find it very productive in our fields and tasty in the kitchen.
