Verbascum - Phoenician Mullein
Verbascum - Phoenician Mullein
This cottage garden classic is treasured for its tall, elegant flower spikes covered in soft, white blooms that that sport the most amazingly coloured stamens. The filaments are fuzzy pinky-purple and are topped with brilliant orange anthers. You need to take a close-up look to get the full effect and it is stunning. This beauty reaches heights of 1-1.5 m and brings vertical structure and long-lasting colour from late spring through summer. As with most verbascums it attracts all kind of pollinators including bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. I love to grow it next to a soft, billowy patch of native grass such as Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum) or Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis). It will self seed creating lovely naturalized patches.. Thrives in poor, well drained soils and sunny sites.Deer resistant
